The weather of Irkutsk is one of the most extremes for its variation of temperatures between seasons. Irkutsk in the south averages -21 C. And experiences minimum temperatures as low as -40 C. Summers are short with mean temperatures of +17, +20 C. Closer to the Lake Baikal summer days are quite warmer +30, +35 C. Baikal actes as cold source during summer, and warm source during autumn and winter before it freezes over. The amount of precipitation through out the Eastern Siberia is not great, about 419 mm (186,5 inches) near Krasnoyarsk, and 458 mm (116,3 inches) in Irkutsk area. Occassionally there are periods when drought can be experienced.
