Kazan is a major transportation center. There are a railway and bus stations, a river port and an international airport from Moscow, St Petersburg, or any other city of Russia. A number of major transport interchange junctions have been completed in Kazan as well as construction of the new "Millenium" bridge has been completed. Renewal of roads is performed with application of up-to-date technologies and foreign-made equipment with Tatarstan being the first of all Russian regions to acquire such technologies and equipment.

There are four regular daily flights from Moscow to Kazan and a host of less regular ones. The airport in Kazan is the headquarters for Tatarstan Airlines, which serves several cities in Russia and flies some charter flights to destinations like Turkey and Egypt. Airlines that service Kazan include Aeroflot, Siberia Airlines S7, SkyExpress, and UTAir fly between Kazan and Moscow, and Rossiya Airlines also flies to Kazan from St. Petersburg. Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines are the two international carriers which currently have scheduled flights to Kazan. The only direct flight from Western Europe to Kazan is run by Lufthanza from Frankfurt. There are four flights a week in each direction between these destinations. Turkish Airlines also runs a couple of flights a week from Istanbul direct to Kazan.

BY BUS
Buses are the cheapest way of getting to and from Kazan. There are buses to Ulyanovsk to Kazan almost hourly between 7:30 a.m. and 5:50 p.m. The journey takes 6 hours and costs 265 roubles ($10). Buses of Samara to Kazan depart daily at 10:00 a.m., cost 406 roubles ($15, 7) and takes 7 hours. Yoshkar-Ola is quite a quick and cheap journey, taking 4 hours and costing 165 roubles ($6.10). Otherwise there are two buses daily to Ufa at 6:20 a.m. and 9:45 a.m., cost 620 roubles ($23) and takes 15 hours. And, for the really adventurous, the bus to Astrakhan, which leaves every Monday at 9:00 a.m., cost 1425 roubles ($53) and takes 32 hours. The bus station also services the small towns surrounding Kazan and around Tatarstan.
BY RIVER PORT
Unfortunately there are no real ferry services connecting towns along the Volga. Instead the river port mainly services small towns close to Kazan. But in summer you can take cruises on the Volga from here fairly cheaply. There are daily return cruises to nearby places like Sviyazhsk Island for 120 roubles ($4.50) and takes 6 hours, and Velikiye Bolgary for 300 roubles ($11) and takes 10 hours.
Comfortable, long distance, return cruises go to places like Samara (2 days), Nizhny Novgorod (2 days), Yaroslavl (5 days) and Moscow (10 days). These cruises are operated in Kazan by a company called Tatflot (Tel: 247-3684). Kazan also has a riverboat terminal on the Volga River and can be reached by river cruise as well.
BY TRAIN
Kazan is easiest to reach by train, as it is a major station stop for several west-east trains. It’s easy enough to reach Kazan from any major city in European Russia and it is possible to go through Kazan on the Trans-Siberian route.
Depending on the train, travel from Moscow to Kazan Station can be as short as 11 hours. Kazan's train station is located close to the city center, with several hotels, restaurants, and the Kremlin within walking distance of the train station.
From Moscow:
- Train 002: Takes 10.5 hours and costs about 700 R ($26) 3rd class, 1800 R ($67) 2nd class and 3600 R ($135) 1st class.
- Train 050: Takes 12 hours, the prices are about the same. (For the return journey these trains are numbered 001 and 049 respectively).
- The trains from Moscow that continue on to places like Ekaterinburg, Omsk or Tumen are usually a little bit cheaper but are slower and not as nice.
From St Petersburg to Kazan the train 103 and takes about 1 day and 3 hours. Other destinations that are easy to reach from Kazan include Samara, Volgograd, Ekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Kirov, Perm, Ufa and Ulan Ude.
