Bell Tower

Chapel of the Shroud 

As soon as the convent was founded, a cemetery was opened on its grounds, which subsequently became a traditional burial place for the church dignitaries and feudal lords of Moscow and later on, in the 19th century, of the intelligentsia and merchants.

Gate Church of the Transfiguration

Built 1687-89 at the behest of the Regent Sofia, it is a baroque tower with five gilded domes. Surrounded by a massive brick wall with swallow-tailed battlements and twelve bastions, the convent is entered via the Gate-Church of the Transfiguration.

Pokrovsky Convent

This convent was popular among the first wives of Russian emperors, the first wife of Vasily III was imprisoned here and later Peter the Great put his first wife Evdokiya Lopukhina here.

The Kremlin

The Kremlin is historically the core of Suzdal, that's where the town has started. At the beginning the Kremlin was surrounded by dams made of ground, on which there were wooden walls with towers, and next to the dams there were trenches filled with water, to protect the town. Now there are only some dams and trenches left, that don't look as intimidating as they were 800 year ago, but provide a very good position to have a view on the town.

The Museum of Wooden Architecture

It includes izbas (small wooden homes), mills, and wooden churches brought here from surrounding Vladimir Province. In June the town hosts a lively crafts festival.

Tsaritsynskaya Tower 

The brick walls were reconstructed at the end of the 17th century, when the convent was refurbished by the regent Sofia (1657-1704), Peter the Great's half-sister. After the unsuccessful Streltsy rebellion of 1689 he had her locked up in the convent's Chamber Prison, while the three ringleaders and 195 other rebels were hanged outside her window.
