The City of Ulyanovsk

Ulyanovsk is the center of the Ulyanovsk Region that is located in the central part of European Russia on both sides of the Volga River. The region is a part of the Middle Volga Valley. It occupies a territory of 37,000 km., the population is 1,488,500 people.

Ulyanovsk is Russia's seventeenth-largest city. It has an area of 263.8 km2 and is made up of 4 urban administrative districts, 7 rural councils, and 22 communities. The prevalent religions are Orthodox Christianity lam.

Ulyanovsk Region is a multinational territory, where people of more than 80 nationalities have lived and worked peacefully side by side since the early days. Russians, Tatars, Chuvashes, and Mordvins are the predominant nationalities.

The railway bridge that was constructed between the years 1912 to 1916, which now has two lanes for road traffic, connects the two sides of the city across the Volga River.

A second bridge has been under construction for years to relieve this bridge of traffic, as it is the only bridge over the river that exists at this time. At night, visitors to the city can either relax in the local nightclubs or grab a bite to eat in one of the restaurants.

The river ports of Ulyanovsk and Sengilei, outfitted with new modern equipment, are the region's largest ports. The Volga flows for 200 km through the region, giving access to five seas. The main river is the Volga and its confluents: the Sura, the Sviyaga, the Bolshoy Cheremshan and others.

International air routes connecting the Volga area with Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, and China also pass through the region. There are two large modern airports capable of handling all types of aircraft.

Ulyanovsk has a relatively well-developed raw mineral resource base. Oilfields have been discovered here, and there are large reserves of cement-making materials, building, glassmaking, and foundry sand, clay aggregate, diatomite, brick-making materials, oil shale, and peat. There are also underground reserves of medicinal and mineral waters. The Volzhanka mineral water bottling plant has an output capacity of 24 million bottles per year.

Industries include food processing, vodka distilling, and the manufacture of motor vehicles, machine tools, and metal and milling equipment.
Forests occupy a quarter of the territory. In the north-west are large woodlands of oak forests with linden and maple. In these forests one can find elk, marten, squirrel and other. There are numerous water birds and waders.

Now Ulyanovsk possesses huge cultural wealth, buildings, houses and memorable places, which in majority have already become a part of present day. Ulyanovsk, are precious witnesses of historical events to descendants.
